The temple tank sat dry for over a decade because its natural catchment had been progressively paved over, cutting off the rainfall that used to feed it. Stone Hands installed an Eco Tunnel  infiltration Drain system around the temple streets — modular recycled-polypropylene units with a 95% void ratio, wrapped in geotextile filtration layers. Surface runoff from the surrounding area was redirected into the system instead of being lost to storm drains. Within one monsoon season, the tank held water again, and it has held water every season since.

What This Demonstrates for Similar Sites

Chennai and other Indian cities have hundreds of temple tanks, lakes, and water bodies in the same condition — dry, disconnected from their original catchment, and treated as unused land rather than functioning water infrastructure. The technical lesson from this project is straightforward: restoring a water body's function does not always require restoring its original catchment. A correctly sized subsurface infiltration system can recreate the recharge pathway artificially, at a fraction of the cost and disruption of large-scale catchment restoration.
